10 YEARS AGO:

Nov. 23, 2002 — Representatives from almost every village between Manley and Unalakleet filled Galena’s community hall earlier this week to discuss the possibility of constructing a Yukon River Highway to link Interior villages.

The meeting was organized with the Tanana Chiefs Conference after villages began to express changed views on rural roads.

25 YEARS AGO:

Nov. 23, 1987 — WASHINGTON — The pullout of several major airlines from Alaska is a temporary trend that will be reversed when the state’s economy rebounds, according to Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska.

In an interview, Stevens said Alaskans should not be upset by the drop in flights by a few carriers.

“It’s a year-by-year thing,” Stevens said. “Some of the pullouts are temporary in nature or due to the economy. Economic activity in Alaska is still low.”

50 YEARS AGO:

Nov. 23, 1962 — Fairbanks beauticians will be in action Sunday afternoon when they take part in the yearly hair styling contest at the Traveler’s Inn.

The operators will work before the audience combing out and styling their model’s hair while three judges select first, second and third place winners.

75 YEARS AGO:

Nov. 23, 1937 — The two-man bunkhouse which burned at the Bartholomae mine is a total loss, it was reported in Fairbanks today.

Nothing was saved, for the cooks who slept in the structure even lost their clothes.

The blaze started from an overheated stove Saturday morning.

The building was a part of the Bartholomae Oil Co. camp at Ester. The company operates a quartz mine and ball mine.
