Dec. 15, 2002 — In a thrilling and competitive prep rifle meet Saturday at the Patty Center rifle range, the West Valley Wolfpack claimed the Region VI championship after outgunning the Tok Wolverines 4,363-4,341.

The win avenges the Wolfpack’s only loss of the regular season, and eight-point defeat of Tok, and defends the regional crown that West Valley won last year.

Dec. 15, 1987 — There’s no evidence the Grinch is involved, but a load of 1,000 Montana blue spruce and Douglas fir Christmas trees is stranded for a second time on its way to North Pole.

“It’s been one disaster after another,” Bonnie Altig said this morning in describing the Boy Scout fundraiser gone awry.

Dec. 15, 1962 — WASHINGTON — Mariner 2, a miracle of U.S. space science, has given man his first close look at another planet.

For 42 minutes Friday it scanned Venus, flashing back 36 million miles the information that may unravel the secrets of the “veiled lady of the universe.”

The historic fly-by came at 3 p.m. after a 109-day, 183 million-mile journey which began at a Cape Caneral, Fla., launching pad.

Dec. 15, 1937 — After a strenuous month of mushing and mining the Fowler party returned to Fairbanks last night.

With Jeff Studdert and his two dog teams, they made the 65 miles from Pine creek over the Chena Hot Springs winter trails to Fairbanks in two days.

Members of the party were Mr. and Mrs. Charles O. Fowler, Ted Williams, Cliff Miller and Mr. Studdert.
