To the editor:
Want to pay $10 per gallon of gas? Well, that’s effectively what is going to happen if Parnell gets his way to give $2 billion per year away to the oil industry without any strings attached. Every Alaskan person, including infants, would make a present of more than $3,P000 to the oil industry each upcoming year.
Here the math: If every person drives 10,000 miles and gets 20 miles per gallon, that makes 500 gallons of gas per year. Imagine each gallon costs an additional $6 on top of the $4 you are already paying, and there you have it: $3,000 per year extra.
That’s how large the voluntary additional giveaway to the oil industry is that Parnell pushes for vigorously and that almost every Republican and some Democrats in Alaska’s House agreed to.
Fortunately, the Senate did not cave in, thanks to Joe Paskvan, Joe Thomas and others. If you don’t like that give-away, vote for Joe Paskvan, Joe Thomas, Bob Miller and David Guttenberg, who have some common sense and backbone to stand up to Parnell, who seems to have forgotten that he is no longer a lobbyist for the oil industry but, as our governor, is supposed to be a representative of all Alaskans.
