To the editor:
I want to express my support for borough mayor candidate Norm Phillips. He represents the values I admire in a likable leader.
I met Norm at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in our P.E. class; he was my locker partner. One day, I challenged him to a game of handball. Remember, the Romans invented this excellent one-on-one contest with just a small ball and a circular room to bounce the ball back and forth. When he was finished cleaning my clock, he gave me that disarming grin that sealed our friendship.
Norm grew up in this valley, learning the skills involved with mining. This town was founded because of the quest for gold and other minerals. We have become the transportation hub of the interior of Alaska, and, for the most part, the infrastructure is pretty well laid out, thanks to our forefathers’ guidance.
We have many challenges ahead as the population catches up to this wide-open country. We need a diplomatic leader, like Norm, to bring local experiences, hard work and devotion to this great place in which we live
