FAIRBANKS—The Lathrop Malemutes rolled to a 58-15 victory over an injury-hampered West Valley Wolfpack squad Tuesday night in a Region VI high school wrestling dual meet at West Valley.
“I have five guys on crutches and one guy with cast, and two of them are still recovering from football injuries,’’ West Valley head coach Norm Davis said by telephone. The Wolfpack forfeited three matches.
“It’s a part of life in athletics,’’ Davis continued. “We’re just going with quality and not quantity and we’re just working a little harder in the mat room. When the numbers are down and the workout partners are few, you just work harder.”
The Malemutes registered six pins, including Dillon Achman putting Kyle Ashcraft’s shoulders to the mat in 1 minute, 13 seconds into their 132-pound match.
Lathrop’s other pins came from Tommy Gillen (138), Sam Zimmerman (145), Seth Cheney (170), Thomas Antal (195) and Alex Gudschinsky (220).
Two of the closest matches were won by the Wolfpack.
James West pulled out a 3-0 decision over Codie Ware in the 106-pound duel and Daide Agnew emerged with 1-8 decision over Andrew Hendrix in the 126 contest.
Hendrix captured the 106-pound title last season in the Class 4A state tournament and Agnew finished sixth in the 125 division.
“He’s really a hard-working kid,’’ Davis said of Agnew. “He’s super fast, he’s super strong and he just gets it done from working hard. And Andrew Hendrix is a tough, tough kid. It was a great match between two great wrestlers.”
The North Pole Patriots downed the Hutchison Hawks 45-27 and the Eielson Ravens pulled away from North Pole 43-24 in a four-team, mix-and-match meet at Hutchison High School. Delta Junction also participated.
