FAIRBANKS — The Lathrop Malemutes had four champions and used its superior depth to dominate the Interior’s first high school wrestling tournament of the season, winning the seven-team Hutchison Meltdown on Saturday by almost 100 points.

The Malemutes finished the two-day event hosted by Hutchison High School with 255 points.

North Pole was second with 167.5 and Eielson finished third with 161.5.

Host Hutchison grabbed the fourth spot with 140.5 points, followed by Galena with 106, West Valley with 84.5 and Delta Junction with seven.

North Pole had three individual champions, while Galena, Eielson and West Valley had two apiece and host Hutchison had one.

Leading the way for the Malemutes were individual champions Storm Williams (145 pounds), Sam Zimmerman (152), Jacob Wharton (195) and Garrett Bennett (220).

Champions from North Pole included David Best (160), David Hayden (195) and Garrett Bennett (220).

Eielson’s Dakota Garner won the combined 106-113 weight class, with teammate Kalib Dunlap claiming the title at 120.

Galena’s winners were Faron Totemoff at 130 and Levi Mills at 182.

West Valley’s James Tammed was unopposed at 98 pounds and teammate Daide Agnew was the champion at 132.

Hutchison’s lone champion was David Tallberg at 138.

In prep wrestling action this week, North Pole has a dual meet at Eielson at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Eielson travels to Barrow this weekend.

Lathrop, North Pole, West Valley and Delta Junction will participate in the Lancer Smith Tournament in Palmer Friday and Saturday.
