A magnitude 5 earthquake woke some residents on Friday –– and was closely followed by a couple of aftershocks.
According to the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Alaska Earthquake Center, the earthquake just before 7 a.m. 54 miles northeast of Ouzinkie and was 18 miles deep.
The USGS Alaska Earthquake Center later reported that it received 29 reports of residents having felt the quake. Some Kodiakans took to Facebook with their experiences. One resident wrote “Did we just have a small earthquake? I just felt my house move.” Others jumped in to confirm, writing “I thought I felt some rumbling!” and “Laying in bed and everything started shaking!”
Just after 7 a.m. an aftershock that measured M3.9 occurred in roughly the same spot at the initial quake.
