JUNEAU, Alaska - A Juneau event is planned to commemorate the victims of the Connecticut elementary school massacre and to help people cope with recent local losses, including two brothers who died in a November boating accident.

The Juneau Empire ( ) says the Wednesday evening event to be held at Northern Light United Church is dedicated to "hope and healing."

Event coordinator Lindsey Kato says participants will be able to light candles and write messages on ribbons to be tied to a "tree of hope."

The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

At the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., 20 children and six adults were fatally shot Friday before 20-year-old gunman Adam Lanza killed himself. Authorities say Lanza also killed his mother at their home.
