JUNEAU, Alaska - Private shooting ranges where customers will be able to fire machine guns and other automatic weapons could soon be coming to Juneau.

KTOO (http://is.gd/9f6VUs) reports that the Juneau Assembly has cleared the way for a private shooting range near the airport. Assembly members voted unanimously Wednesday to exempt private gun ranges from a city ordinance that prohibits discharging a firearm within a quarter mile of a road.

Dan Miller is president of Juneau Mercantile and Armory, LLC. He is planning a 13,000-square-foot indoor shooting range and gun store. He says the shooting range will be in the basement and encased in concrete.

The project must go back to the Planning Commission for approval before it can move forward.
