JUNEAU, Alaska — A dramatic fire in the upper floors of a downtown Juneau, Alaska, apartment building sent flames shooting from the roof into the night sky.

By late Monday night, fire crews were mopping up hot spots at the four-story Gastineau Apartments.

Deputy Fire Chief Brian Long said he had no reports of serious injuries.

Bartlett Regional Hospital spokesman Jim Strader told the Juneau Empire that several hours after the fire started, his hospital had seen only a handful of patients with minor injuries.

Apartment resident Sarah Day said flames were seen on the roof by about 6 p.m. Monday and residents were told to leave.

A Juneau police officer told onlookers that all the residents were out of the building.

An emergency shelter has been set up at Centennial Hall.

Alaska Army National Guard spokesman Guy Hayes said his agency provided five National Guardsmen to help with perimeter security.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire.
