After a lengthy evening of candidate questions, the Interior Taxpayers’ Association, a political group that favors low taxes and regularly sponsors a ballot measure to cap borough revenues, has released its set of endorsements for the upcoming Oct. 2 local elections.
The evening featured a strong focus on a pending borough labor contract that the ITA was more than happy to pan as an overreach of the borough’s employees in a tough fiscal climate for private businesses. Incumbent Mayor Luke Hopkins and a few others got no love from moderator Donna Gilberts for their support or involvement in the contract.
The endorsements were decided by a vote of ITA membership and are as follows.
Borough Mayor: Norm Phillips
Assembly Seat A: Joe Blanchard
Assembly Seat F: Gregg “Rocky” MacDonald
Assembly Seat G: Lance Roberts
The races for Fairbanks City Council, the ITA endorsed Tim Sovde and Perry Walley. The ITA also supported all three borough ballot measures as well as the city’s one ballot measure.
