Letter to the editor
Sept. 18, 2012
To the editor:
As an Alaska educator for many years, in both rural and urban areas, I pay attention to the issues brought before the education committee of our state House. I was watching as Alan Dick led the committee into an abyss of misinformation and allowed a minimum of testimony from those who might have differing opinions from his own and could have offered another viewpoint regarding intervention efforts in drastically low-performing school districts in our state.
It is difficult to begin to describe just how much damage Alan Dick could do to education in our region. His understanding of current educational issues is not even in the ballpark of what is needed for real educational reform that provides all Alaska children with a leveled playing field.
In listening to Alan Dick’s testimony in front of the education committee last spring, I found it hard to believe that such a misspoken and ill-informed person could even be considered to represent our district.
I urge my fellow voters to support David Guttenberg in any way possible in this election. Defeating Alan Dick is paramount to supporting our children and their education. Whether you live in the Interior or the rural areas of our district, please elect David Guttenberg. He has the intelligence and concern necessary to support all of our children. David listens.
