FAIRBANKS - Cooking and heating-related incidents are the leading cause of residential structure fires in Alaska, according to the Alaska Division of Fire and Life Safety. Unsafe cooking during the holidays can increase the risk for fire.
If a fire occurs in a pan, the most effective and safest method of control is to turn off the burner and put a lid on the pan, according to advice from the division. Carrying a pan that’s on fire is not advised because it may ignite clothes or spill, causing severe burns. Putting water on a grease fire will only spread the fire. If the fire is inside your oven, turn off the heat and leave the door closed.
Cooking your holiday turkey in a hot oil fryer is not recommended because of the extreme fire danger of igniting the hot oil, according to a news release from the Division of Fire and Life Safety. A turkey fryer should be used only outdoors away from combustibles. A fire extinguisher should be nearby.
Call 911 as soon as possible in case of any fire emergency.
