Hawks split a pair of games in Homer

FAIRBANKS — The Hutchison Hawks split a pair of games at the End of the Road high school hockey tournament in Homer on Friday, but the Railbelt Conference teams all suffered losses to Anchorage schools.

Hutchison downed Greatland Conference rival Delta Junction 9-2 on Friday, then lost a 5-1 decision to Class 4A Homer.

Brandon Rustad scored three goals to set the pace for the Hawks in the win against Delta Junction. Justin Boots, Alex Marcos, Kevin Steffey, Thomas Lees, Dylan Edwards and Dylan Sands also scored goals for the Hawks.

Allison Davis recorded nine saves to earn the win for the Hawks.

Tom Lemelin gave Hutchison a 1-0 lead against Homer in the first period, but the hometown Mariners came on strong to record the win. Marcos got the assist on Lemelin’s goal.

Homer scored five power play goals in the second period.

Dan Slane made 19 saves for the Hawks, who had 29 shots on goal.

In Class 4A non-conference games Friday, Dimond blanked West Valley 5-0 and West Anchorage topped Lathrop 4-1.

Saturday, West Anchorage downed North Pole 6-1.

Jason Donald scored the lone goal for the Patriots with an assist from Blake Wade. It was Donald’s fifth goal of the season.

Six different players scored goals for West Anchorage, which led 2-1 after the second period.

Allan Heineken made 32 saves and Jimmy Culley had eight for North Pole. The Patriots had 15 shots on goal.
