FAIRBANKS — As of Wednesday, approximately 45 caribou had been reported taken in the winter Fortymile caribou hunt that opened on Dec. 1. The quota for the hunt is 250 caribou. Hunters had harvested 30 caribou in Zone 3 off the Taylor Highway; 7 caribou in Zone 2; and 8 caribou in Zone 1 off the Steese Highway. Areas in Zone 1 adjacent to the Steese Highway are closed because of large numbers of caribou congregated along the highway.

Minto Flats moose

The reported harvest for the registration permit hunt for antlerless moose on the Minto Flats stood at 44 as of Monday. The harvest quota is 100. The harvest will likely increase now that there is more snow and hunters on snowmachines have better traveling conditions.

Delta bison

Hunters are having good success bagging Delta bison this year. As of a week ago, hunters had already harvested 40 bison in the drawing permit hunt that opened Oct. 1. The state issued 75 drawing permits for the hunt.
