Hanneman, Lewis post ski triumphs

FAIRBANKS — Logan Hanneman and Melissa Lewis won their respective men’s and women’s classes in the first Buetow Dental Distance Race Series event of the season Saturday at Birch Hill Recreation Area.

Hanneman, a sophomore who skis for the Alaska Nanooks, captured the 15-kilometer event in 41 minutes, 8.2 seconds, to finish 14.4 seconds ahead of senior teammate Lex Treinen.

Max Olex, a Nanooks’ junior, placed third in 42:58.2, with Peter Brewer of Alaska Nordic Racing and Tyson Flaharty of Goldstream Sports rounded out the top five in 43:28.7 and 46:06.2, respectively.

Lewis posted a time of 54:01.9 to claim the top spot, finishing more than a minutes ahead of her nearest competitor.

Maria Bray captured the runner-up spot in 55:35.0 and Christina Turman was third in 55:52.6. Karin Gillis and Shalane Frost rounded out the top five in 1:02:05.6 and 1:02:56.8, respectively.

In the shorter 7.5K race, West Valley’s Sam Hildenbrand won the men’s event in 27:50.4 and West Valley’s Sarah Jackson took the women’s title in 35:32.8.

Men’s age-group winners in Saturday’s 15K race were: Hanneman, junior men; Treinen, age 20-25; Mike Kramer, 40-49; David Edic, 50-59; and Byron Broda, 60-69.

Women’s age-group winners in Saturday’s 15K racer were: Emily Merrioles, junior women; Turman, 20-29, Bray, 30-39, Lewis 40-49, and Gillis, 50-59; and Susan Sugai, 60-69.

Snowshoe race

Ten racer turned out to compete in Saturday’s Almost Solstice Snowshoe Classic in downtown Fairbanks.

Chad Carroll and Erica Burr led their respective men’s and women’s classes on the 1-mile ungroomed course starting and finishing in Griffin Park.

Carroll won the men’s race in 7 minutes, 37 seconds, as the top three finishers were within six seconds of each other. Ben Nelson captured the runner-up spot in 7:37 and Devin McDowell was third in 7:39.

Joseph Stewart finished fourth in 9:49 and Shane McBurney was fifth in 12:51.

Burr won the women’s race in 9:37, more than a minute ahead of runner-up Jane Lanford, who finished in 10:49.

Katie Graff was third in 11:05, followed by Anna Griggs in 15:10 and Sarah McDonnell in 21:10.

Carroll and Burr also won the season-opening Heart of Darkness Snowshoe race held last week.

The next event on the Calendar is the Jan. 5 Moose Mountain Snowshoe Challenge.
