To the editor:
Earlier this year, Gov. Parnell attempted to change Alaska’s oil taxes and give the major oil corporations a $2 billion per year tax break that would have broken our state budget.
This bill sailed through the House with ease, as all the Republicans fell in line. In the Senate, however, a bipartisan coalition that included two of our local senators, Joe Thomas and Joe Paskvan (and was led by Republican Sen. Gary Stevens from Kodiak) stopped this travesty cold.
Parnell has been saying that he will try this again. He hopes that a new Legislature will toe the line on his tax giveaway. We can only hope that the Senate will again stop it.
Come the general election, remember who voted for this giveaway. Who were these politicians who were willing to go along with this plan to send Alaska into the red? Reps. Tammie Wilson and Alan Dick and Sen. John Coghill. Don’t vote for them.
We need to re-elect Joe Paskvan, Joe Thomas, David Guttenberg and Bob Miller. They won’t give Alaskans’ money to the oil companies.
