A gull flies past an excavator removing fence material at the Fairbanks North Star Borough waste transfer site at the east end of Farmers Loop off of the Old Steese Highway Monday afternoon, June 6, 2016. The site will be closed through June 30 for major maintenance and improvements, according to a notice from the Fairbanks North Star Borough. Work will include a pad expansion “allowing for future recycling, access improvements, all new fencing, relocating and improving the reuse shelter, four grade-separated roll-off areas, new household hazardous waste collection shelter, new energy efficient lighting and a recycled asphalt surface,” according to the borough notice. The work will be completed by local contractor Great Northwest Inc. Borough residents are asked to use another transfer site during this time. Questions about the project can be directed to the borough’s Public Works Department at 459-1345.
