FORT WAINWRIGHT — A 40-year-old soldier who was the noncommissioned officer in charge of emergency services at Bassett Army Community Hospital at Fort Wainwright has died.

Authorities say in a release that Army Sgt. 1st Class Bryan H. Hays collapsed during physical training Monday at the base gym in Fairbanks. He was taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The native of Bossier City, La., joined the Army in 1999 as a combat medic. He deployed twice to Iraq.

Among his decorations were the Meritorious Service Medal and three Army Commendation medals.

A memorial is planned Friday afternoon at Fort Wainwright's Southern Lights Chapel.
