Poppers are primarily a top-water fly used for northern pike, grayling, trout and salmon. They are fished on a floating Line with a 7- to 9foot leader. The two presentations best used with poppers are straight and across with a mend upstream then stripping across the water to create the “pop,” or a steelheader’s favorite skated presentation, according to Jason Rivers at Big Ray’s Fly Shop in Fairbanks. He advises using a wire tippet for pike.
