ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A small fire has occurred on Royal Dutch Shell PLC's Noble Discoverer drill rig in Dutch Harbor.

Shell spokesman Curtis Smith says the problem occurred Friday morning when one of the main engines on the rig backfired and a fire broke out.

He says crew members put the fire out within five minutes.

No one was injured. Smith says an inspection afterward indicated the ship was not damaged.

He says the backfire was loud and probably heard by just about everyone in Dutch Harbor.

The drilling rig recently completed work in the Chukchi Sea for the season and is in Dutch Harbor before it will be taken to Seward. Smith says it has not yet been decided if the rig will remain in Seward for the winter.
