Gwen Macander is a sixth-grade student at Pearl Creek Elementary School. She is an avid reader, skier and student.
Her teachers describe her as a diligent hard worker with a caring personality and helpful nature.
“Gwen impresses me daily in a variety of ways — from her diligence and hard work on every assignment to the way she treats those around her,” her teacher said. “Gwen puts her best effort in everything she does, be it a simple assignment or complex, multi-step project.”
Gwen admits to enjoying most aspects of school, though she says she likes reading, writing and math the most. She says it’s hard to say what makes her a successful student other than simply paying attention in class and turning in her work on time.
One of her favorite moments recently in school was when her class visited the University of Alaska Fairbanks and learned multiple ways to calculate different fun math concepts. For instance, she learned how tall and long ancient predators were and how quickly the temperature can change when it’s windy.
Gwen loves to create art in addition to her other subjects. She enjoys drawing and she plays violin for her school orchestra. Outside of school she enjoys alpine skiing and joined the Fairbanks Alpine Ski Club last year.
She is still unsure what she hopes to do in the future, though she enjoys chemistry and biology. Specifically, she enjoys botany.
“I like chemistry because I think it’s cool that atoms make up everything, and I just like atoms in general,” Gwen said. “I like biology because I just love plants and such.”
