This early Fairbanks photo was taken on the north bank of the Chena River in the vicinity of the present Fairbanks North Star Borough building. It shows how small sternwheelers were removed from the river before freeze-up with the use of a capstan, which is a drum that rotates on a vertical axis to wind up a cable. This process shows the value of a horse in this operation.
