The organizers of the Junior North American Championships for junior mushers are reaching out to the rural areas of Alaska and extending an offer of grant money to help encourage young mushers to come to North Pole for the championships.

With the aim of perpetuating the sport of dog mushing and increasing youth participation, the grants will provide a lucky group with financial assistance to offset transportation costs.

For rural communities off the road system, six $500 grants will be awarded; for communities on the road system, but outside of the Fairbanks-North Pole area, individuals can apply for $100 grants.

The grant application deadline is Jan. 15. Those interested should contact Howard Rixie at 907-378-7797 or via email at The Junior North American Championship race sign-up will be held March 4 from 6-8 p.m. at Hotel North Pole. The races will take place March 5-7.
