DENALI PARK, Alaska - What better way to celebrate Winterfest than to join a student team of “mushers” and race toward victory, dragging a sled behind you? That’s what students at Denali Borough School District did during the annual winter celebration.

With guidance from Denali National Park experts, students also learned how to dig snow shelters and tunneled into a giant pile of snow adjacent to Tri-Valley School. They tromped around on snowshoes then helped ice carver Larry Moen transform an ice block outside the Tri-Valley Community Library.

As winds howled, they practiced the critical skill of making a fire for survival.

Festivities moved to Denali National Park on Saturday and included face painting, hands-on kids activities, snow carving and free dog sled rides.

The weekend was topped off with a chili feed and Denali’s Got Talent competition at the Tri-Valley Community Center.

The multi-day event was once again a fun-filled extravaganza for all ages.
