The special fundraiser held last weekend to help the Nenana Volunteer Fire Department raised enough money to pay insurance for this quarter and workman’s comp for six months.

This is great news for an all-volunteer organization.

In addition, it was a fun community event. Volunteers sold hamburgers and bratwurst and soft vanilla ice cream was very popular. There were raffles and silent auction items. Despite the heat, more than one person tried on the homemade fur parkas and then placed their bids.

There were plenty of games for kids. Bouncy houses also kept children hopping, and the sweltering temperatures didn’t seem to slow them down.

A large trailer in front of Nenana’s Historic Railroad Depot served as the stage for live music from local musicians including the Starkweathers, the Verhagens and, finally, the Capital Band. Capital band members, made up of state officials, including Rep. Dave Talerico, came from all across the state to play at this volunteer fundraiser.
