FAIRBANKS — A Fairbanks man has been charged with two counts of felony assault for allegedly pistol-whipping his roommate and his roommate’s girlfriend Saturday.
Fairbanks police responding to a report of an assault on the 500 block of 7th Avenue said they found a man and woman with cuts on their heads, according to a criminal complaint filed in court.
The male victim told police his roommate, Garrett Maurice Cooper, 31, hit him in the back of the head with a pistol during an argument about rent and paying bills.
He said Cooper pointed the gun and told him to open his mouth. He refused. Cooper then reportedly put the gun to the man’s temple and again told him to open his mouth.
His girlfriend said she tried to intervene and that Cooper hit her with the gun, knocking her to the ground, she said.
She was taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital for treatment of her cut.
Police said they found Cooper outside the home. They found a gun like the one described by the victims on the far side of a fence behind the property, according to the complaint.
Cooper was indicted Thursday on two counts of third-degree felony assault. He is in custody at Fairbanks Correctional Center and is next scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
