49ers clobber Eagle River

FAIRBANKS — The Fairbanks 49ers closed out their four-game American Legion Baseball road trip the same way they started — a 21-0, seven inning victory.

The 49ers opened the trip by beating Bartlett 21-0 Friday evening and closed it by beating Eagle River by the same score Sunday afternoon. In between, Fairbanks split a doubleheader against East Anchorage Saturday afternoon.

While the 49ers pounded out 23 hits against Bartlett, they needed just 10 hits to beat Eagle River Sunday.

Jace Lovell led the attack against Eagle River with two hits in five trips to the place. He drove in five runs, including a 3-run double.

Scooter Bynum, Tanner Shoemaker, Chris Gavora and Rodney Perdue all went 1 for 2. Shoemaker scored three times and drive in three runs, while Bynum scored three times and had two RBI. Perdue had double, two runs scored and two RBI, while Gavora drove in a run.

Zach Wad was 1 for 1 with an RBI and a run scored and leadoff hitter LJ Sotelo was 1 for 3 with three walks and four runs scored. Sotelo He also had an RBI.

Three Fairbanks pitchers combined for the three-hit shutout.

Mekiah Stansel got the win working five innings and giving up three hits. Shoemaker and Lovell each pitched one inning of scoreless relief.

The 49ers close out the season with a three-game series against Chugiak this weekend at Arco Field between the Carlson Center and the Fairbanks Curling Club on lower Second Avenue

The series is key for seeding in the state tournament the following week in Anchorage. Five teams, including the 49ers are within two games of each other in the battle for first place.

Saturday’s doubleheader starts at 12:30 p.m., while Sunday’s single game gets going at 11 a.m.

Bun on the Run

Today is the final day to pre-register for the Bun on the Run 5-kilometer running race scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday on the trails at Creamer’s Field.

The race is limited to 100 entrants and the field is filling fast.

Preregister at Bun on the Run food stand next to Beaver Sports on College or e-mail your name, age, gender and T-shirt size to race director Kevin Brinegar at kevinbrin egar@hotmail.com.

The preregistration fee is $20.

Race day registration may be available next to the Creamer’s Dairy barn.
