FAIRBANKS — Polls for local elections open today at 7 a.m. and will close at 8 p.m.
The headline race of this election is the three-way race for Fairbanks North Star Borough mayor, which pits incumbent Mayor Luke Hopkins against former Doyon, Limited executive Norm Phillips and North Pole yoga instructor Robert Morris.
Other important borough races include three races for Borough Assembly and two races for the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District school board.
The borough ballot also includes three propositions, a renewal of the tax cap and a housekeeping measure to reaffirm that assemblymembers are elected at large. Borough voters also will decide the future of the borough’s involvement in air quality with Proposition 3, which stops the borough from regulating air quality emissions from home heating devices in any form.
Voters in the city of Fairbanks will vote on two City Council races as well as a ballot issue authorizing to accept loans for Golden Heart Utilities to pay for upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant.
North Pole voters will decide a mayoral race and one City Council seat as well as a ballot proposition to accept a state loan to replace the generator at the wastewater treatment facility.
