Eclipse, Phoenix soccer teams earn silver medals in Minnesota

FAIRBANKS—The Eclipse and Phoenix soccer clubs reached three finals in USA Cup tournaments during the past two weeks in Blaine, Minn.

The Eclipse 2001 and 99 girls teams and the Phoenix 99 boys squad advanced to championship games of the USA Cup Weekend on July 13-15 and the Eclipse 2001 played for the under-age 11 girls gold division title in the USA Cup on July 17 through Saturday.

The Eclipse 2001 received the U11 silver medal in the USA Cup after falling 4-1 to Futura Amora of Kansas City, Mo., in the final. It was the Eclipse’s only loss after posting five straight wins in bracket play.

The Eclipse came home with silver after a 3-1 loss to FC NW of Canada. The Eclipse went 2-1 in U13 pool play, and worked its way to the final with a 1-0 quarterfinal win over FC United of Iowa and a 2-0 semifinal victory against Brookings FC of South Dakota.

The Phoenix 99 lost 2-0 to the Puerto Rico in the U13 boys title contest. The Phoenix went 3-0 in pool play, outscoring its opponents 16-0 and earning a bye in the quarterfinal round. The Fairbanks squad reached the final after a 3-0 win against Brookings FC.

The Phoenix 2001, competing at the U11 level, lost 3-1 in a quarterfinal to the Wisconsin Rapids after the Phoenix went 3-0 in pool play.

In the USA Cup, the Eclipse 2001 compiled a 1-0-2 pool play record to advance to round one of the playoffs, where it prevailed 1-0 against the St. Croix Surge of Minnesota.

The victory sent the Alaskans to the semifinal round, where they emerged with a 1-0 win against the Spartan FC Select of Illinois, sparked by Hannah Olson’s goalkeeping and Kami Steel’s goal off of a shot from midfield.

The Eclipse lost 2-0 in the final to the Aurora Stingers of Ontario, who scored on a penalty kick in the first half and added a goal in the second half.

The Eclipse 99 and the Phoenix 99 each advanced to semifinals in the USA Cup.

The Eclipse 99 had a 3-0 run in pool play of the U13 silver division to reach the quarterfinals, where they cruised to a 6-0 win against Minnesota’s Euro FC Fury. The Interior Alaska players lost 4-1 in a semifinal against another Minnesota club, Valley United.

The Phoenix 99 went 2-1-0 in pool play of the U13 boys silver division and pulled out a 1-0 quarterfinal victory against the Tenancingo Youth Soccer Club, one of four teams from Mexico in the division. The Phoenix lost 2-1 in the semifinal to another squad from Mexico, Noria FC.

The Phoenix 2001 lost 4-0 in a quarterfinal against Unam Azul of Mexico after the Phoenix finished second in pool play (2-1-0) in the U11 gold division.

The USA Cup attracted 958 teams from 22 states and 16 countries. About 14,000 athletes competed in the U9 to U19 age divisions.

Legion JV

The Fairbanks 49ers junior varsity swept Chugiak in a doubleheader Saturday at Marlin Field, winning 2-0 and 7-5 respectively.

In the opener, Tyler Hill threw a two-hitter and struck out seven while going the distance in the seven-inning game.

Tyler Wicken led off the second inning with a triple and scored the game’s first run. Chad Freeman also scored.

Fairbanks scored six runs in the fifth inning of the second game, as Casey Lewandowski led off with a triple and later scored to ignite the surge.

Lewandowski also pitched two scoreless innings.

Connor Soden reached base four times with a triple and three walks, and he scored twice and drove in two runs.

The 49ers JV, in a first-place tie with South Anchorage, plays host to Wasilla in a doubleheader at 11 a.m. Saturday.
