To the editor:

Our community is lucky to have our borough Mayor Luke Hopkins as a candidate for reelection. Mayor Hopkins is a man of integrity and hard work — exactly the qualities I want to see in our borough leadership.

Mayor Hopkins knows our community and its needs. I’ve seen him at many community events listening to people’s ideas and concerns. His commitment to good public process has helped find solutions to some of our most complicated challenges — such as balancing the need for affordable residential heat with the need for good air quality. Mayor Hopkins’ innovative wood stove change-out and Split, Stack, Store and Save education programs are a great fit for our community.

During the years he’s lived in Fairbanks, Mayor Hopkins has earned respect and trust from our community. He reaches out to people: lending a strong pulling arm at the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics blanket toss, pitching in during clean-up projects and engaging discussion with everyone on our borough budget. He has built a reputation for honesty and good judgment.

We chose wisely last time around, and we should select Luke Hopkins as our mayor again on Oct. 2.
