FAIRBANKS — Col. Mark A. Freitag, the new deputy commanding officer for U.S. Army Alaska was formally welcomed to Fort Wainwright on Wednesday morning at a Circle of Honor ceremony.

Freitag is the second-in-command of U.S. Army Alaska, a division-sized unit comprised of four brigades split between Fort Wainwright and Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage. Col. Freitag previously served at Fort Wainwright and in Iraq as commander of the 4th Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team.
