FAIRBANKS — Army criminal officials are investigating the death Sunday of a Fort Wainwright soldier, who died after suffering a severe head injury.
A statement Monday from Army Alaska said the injured soldier was rushed from his Fort Wainwright barracks room early Sunday morning to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The soldier’s identity is expected to be released today.
The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Detachment at Fort Wainwright is investigating the incident. Additional details could be available today, said Chuck Canterbury, the civilian public information officer for Army Alaska at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage.
“It’s under investigation,” Canterbury said. “I just can’t get into all the details, and we have a requirement to wait on a 24-hour clock from when the time of the last of kin has been notified.”
The next of kin have been notified.
