Fairbanks Daily News-Miner Letter to the Editor

Aug. 16, 2012

To the editor:

Recently there have been several news articles in the Daily News-Miner that addressed the issue of flotation gear when engaging in water activities. A few people drowned, but one article had a happy ending, in that two people survived a capsizing only because they had flotation gear.

The front of the Interior/Alaska section of the News-Miner on Aug. 16 shows several young people having fun on the river. The raft looks unstable and most of the people do not have flotation gear on.

The river is cold and the potential for disaster is very real. This scene could very well have had an unhappy ending.

The News-Miner should have captioned the picture “Parents, teach your kids water safety and make them wear flotation gear.”
