To the editor:
It usually seems there aren’t many things the Legislature does that affect me personally. Yeah, they pass a budget every year that provides services I don’t pay for — here in our wonderful Alaska Age Of Soc-oil-ism — but the rest of it? Who cares?
Likewise, I’m not much of a partisan. But the Republican House majority sure got my attention this year. After the bipartisan Senate passed a bill to provide us all a little short-term relief from our ridiculous energy prices, the House Republicans yanked it away. Come on, local families were taking out loans and selling household items just to pay for fuel.
Adding insult to injury, the Republicans then turned right around and tried to give $2 billion in tax breaks to the oil companies. Two billion bucks!
When families were hurting to pay heating bills, Parnell and the House Republicans tried to fork over $2 billion to the most profitable companies in the world. Our oil wealth is good enough for giant corporations, but not for us regular Alaskans?
I’m voting for the Democrat in my district, David Guttenberg. I think other folks ought to do the same. Rep. Guttenberg voted to stop the giveaway. We need to encourage folks on the bipartisan coalition and others like Rep. Guttenberg to keep doing the right thing.
This current bunch of Republican rascals marching to Parnell’s orders want us to suffer, broke in the cold, while oil execs count our money in their warm Houston mansions.
