To the editor:
I am absolutely speechless about the conduct of the Joe Thomas campaign and the disrespect they are showing the voters through their deceptions and outright lies about Sen. John Coghill.
I have known John for more than two decades and have worked for him for the 14 years he has been in office. I cannot stress enough that he is a man of immense integrity who works every day to represent people against government. He truly does believe in less government and protection of individual liberties.
To say he has only sponsored one energy bill is a lie; he has sponsored or co-sponsored 17 bills and resolutions that directly impact energy policy in Alaska.
For the Thomas campaign to take credit for the gas storage credits, funding for the storage facility in North Pole and Nenana Basin gas exploration credits is ludicrous. Thomas voted against Coghill’s amendment on the Senate floor putting $15 million in the capital budget for gas storage in North Pole. That would have directly benefited Golden Valley Electric Association ratepayers. Without the help of the Republican majority in the House, Fairbanks would’ve come home empty-handed when it came to tax credits or capital investments for gas storage and Nenana Basin incentives.
Voters have a unique opportunity to vote for two men with two very different beliefs. One is a Republican who believes in less government and more freedom. The other is a Democrat who tows the line for the Democratic Party agenda. As House majority leader for six years and House Rules Committee chairman for three years, Sen. Coghill has been one of the strongest advocates for states’ rights and protecting Alaska’s claim to its resources. He gave up his leadership position in the House to become a member of the Senate minority because he wanted to lead Senate Republicans into a majority based on Republican principles.
I have always respected Joe Thomas, but the tone of his campaign and its character assassination of Sen. Coghill have left me nauseous. I can only hope people see past the rhetoric in these last-minute political attacks. Vote for integrity, vote for John Coghill.
