FAIRBANKS — The tentative opening for the Copper River personal-use dip net fishery at Chitina is June 7, though that could change depending on daily sonar counts at Miles Lake.
According to a preseason schedule released Wednesday by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the first dip net opening will begin June 7 at 12:01 a.m. and close June 10 at 11:59 p.m. for a total of 96 hours of fishing.
The schedule is subject to change based on sonar numbers once the sonar is operational at Miles Lake. If actual counts are below projected counts, fishing time will be reduced. If the sonar counts exceed projected counts, fishing time will be increased.
The sonar at Miles Lake is not usually operational until mid May. Last year the first sonar counts began on May 16.
