Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, has named Robert Doehl as his new special assistant for military and veterans affairs.

The Anchorage resident is replacing C.W. Floyd. Doehl recently retired as a colonel after serving as the vice wing commander of the 176th Wing of the Alaska Air National Guard. His 32-year military career includes a deployment to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. He also served as as trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice and an assistant attorney general for the State of Alaska.

In his new role Doehl will deal directly with the military and veterans community on issues including veterans assistance, service academy nominations and command-level outreach and planning with military forces.
