FAIRBANKS — On Thursday, Sen. Lisa Murkowski announced a piece of legislation that honors late Sen. Ted Stevens by naming the South summit of Mount Hunter and the northern half of the Chugach Ice Field after him.

“Ted Stevens was one of the true giants of Alaska’s short history,” Murkowski said. “It’s an honor to nominate both a mountain and an ice field to be named in his memory.”

The view of Denali usually permits one to see three great giants at a time. Denali itself, outranks the others in height, and Mt. Foraker comes in second. In between the two is third-highest Mt. Hunter with its north and south summits, steep walls and jagged rocks. The south peak is smaller than the first, but at 13,895 feet, it is still the tallest unnamed peak in Alaska. In a short time, it could be called “Stevens Peak.”

The Chugach ice field spans the Chugach Mountains, east of Anchorage. The southern and western portions of the ice field have already been named for Harding and Sargent. The Ted Stevens Ice Field would cover the northern and eastern part of the mountain range, where the Harvard, Matanuska, Columbia and many other glaciers stem from.

Now the christening is up to the U.S. Geological Place Names Board. The legislation requires the board to name both the peak and ice field within 30 days of its passage.

Murkowski planned to unveil the bill at the Department of Interior’s annual budget markup, but the meeting was canceled for unrelated reasons.

Stevens died this August in a plane crash after serving as a U.S. Senator for all but 11 years of Alaska’s statehood.

“During his more than 40 years in the Senate, he played a significant role in the transformation of Alaska from an impoverished territory to a full-fledged state,” Murkowski said. “While there are a number of facilities named after Stevens, this bill will guarantee that future generations of Alaskans will remember him.”

Nameing great things after not so great people only serve to show just how selfish our elected officals really are. Remember he is a convicted felon, just because the lawyers screwed up can not change the facts, he was a CROOK. Even the plane crash that took his live along with others was a result of "pay backs" for doing the will of those with enough money to buy his votes. The sewerage treatment plant would be more like it.

You're low class. Nuff said.

OH AND OH MY???

Ted Stevens had filmed TV ads that Lisa pulled out of respect. Now, I'm sure that any endorsements or statements have the blessing of the family, because that's who Lisa is. Please verify your comments. Because really, you're speaking out of turn if the family is encouraging this.

Uhm... do any of you get that a write in campaign is part of the electoral process??? And no amount of (what you call) a spoiled child jumping up and down will get them back in the race just because they want it???

Lisa is taking an avenue provided for in the process. Deal with it.

Now, we need to get all those who HAVE NOT SPOKEN to vote... and on November 2nd, the people WILL have spoken.

I suspect you are afraid that your precious joe miller might not make as good a showing if real Alaskans turn out, and not just those from 'Little Seattle'... (hahahahaha... I don't care who you are... that's funny!!!)

Anyway, what's the harm... (I'm sure you would just LOVE to see her humiliated a second time!!!)

Just go with it baby!!!

Larmex... try to remember that the prosecution withheld evidence... that the conviction was thrown out and no, you are very wrong. Ted was submarined for the sake of an election. They got what they wanted, which was Begich in office. I have to ask how much Begich knows about this and what was his part. Ted Stevens is not a convicted felon. And you sir (ma'am???) are an uneducated moron.

Lisa,

The south summit of Mt. Hunter already has a name that is in wide use and has historical significance.

Please drop this legislation and choose a mountain without a name, and just an elevation.

thnk you

Her first choice was,

"I know you did not care enough about me to get out and vote but, please, please love me and and let me go back to DC and serve my own ego"

Couldn't get the administration to cough up the money for a sign that big.

Really, it was just a coincidence she did this the day before her announcement to ignore the results of the primary. Outside money and the power of the incumbency, hear her roar.

I would have supported her in 4 years for governor or senate. Now I hope someone proposes naming a sewer lagoon after her. No need to wait for her death, let her enjoy it now.

I would have went bigger and asked for a rename to Mt. McKinley...

Greatoutdoors- Arlington Cemetary is a place of honor for people who served their country, and your attitude towards a man being buried there vs his home state just sucks. Have some class and shut your mouth...

Pleeeease, do not name anything after ANY politician. They get paid to do their JOB. They get too many perks to do their job. And besides, there is already an airport named after this one. He was in his mid-80's. Let him rest in peace. Remember he is being buried in Washington DC., that should tell you something. Let the rest of us enjoy UNNAMED mountains. No more money or time spent on naming public domains. Thanks you.
