FAIRBANKS — A new comprehensive gardening manual is available from the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service.

The book, “Sustainable Gardening: The Alaska Master Gardener Manual,” was adapted from an Oregon State University publication. The 490-page manual, which sells for $40, is a basic gardening text. It also offers information on soils and fertilizers, propagation, berry crops, pruning, composting, plant diseases and more.

The manual focuses on sustainable gardening practices, a holistic method for growing plants that is good for families, good for the community and the environment, said Michele Hebert, the Tanana District agriculture and horticulture agent.

Copies may be ordered by contacting extension at 877-520-5211.
