FAIRBANKS - They’re not as coveted as Minto Flats moose permits so you probably won’t have to stand in line to get one, but the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in Fairbanks will begin issuing permits for this year’s Chatanika River Personal Use Whitefish Spear Fishery on Aug. 23.

Permits will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 8 a.m. Only one permit per household will be issued. Applicants must have a valid resident sport fishing license.

Permits allow holders to take 10 whitefish in the Chatanika River from the downstream side of the Elliott Highway bridge to ADF&G markers located at the trans-Alaska Pipeline crossing approximately 7 river miles downriver from the bridge.

The spear fishery is open Sept. 24 through Oct. 24.

For more information, contact the Division of Sport Fish in Fairbanks at 459-7207.
