ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A helicopter taking rescuers to a group of sightseers stranded on a glacier in Alaska has rolled over on the icy field.

Officials say there are no reported injuries among the three crew members aboard the Alaska Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk that slid and rolled on Knik Glacier Tuesday afternoon.

The crew was trying to rescue five people stranded on the glacier since their small plane apparently crashed Sunday.

Maj. Guy Hayes says the helicopter is heavily damaged. Another helicopter and HC-130 Hercules aircraft has been dispatched to the scene, roughly 40 miles northeast of Anchorage.

Rescuers skied across a glacier in whiteout conditions Monday to bring food, water and blankets to the Alaska pilot and four visitors. The group reported only minor bruises.

akmad64,

If YOU had actually read my first post without prejudice, you would have realized that I didn't suggest that people should not be rescued. I reminded AlaskaO that this particular situation was an ACCIDENT and then suggested a bond for activities such as climbing Denali.

Then you posted "I agree that they should post a bond to insure some sort of recompensation."

So; why, at that point, did you feel the need to call everyone with opinions differing from yours; stupid, dumb and/or ignorant?

Lalaleelou

I have read and re-read my post, honestly I don't see where you come up with your rediculous observation that I like or would like for "things to be taken care of".

It may appear that way to you, but it's not that way at all. I do the taking care of, myself. I take care of myself and my mother who is a cancer survivor. Your recants are pointless as your opinion. I must admit however, it would be nice to be taken care of. In no way, shape, or form do I mean, or say that these people are expendable. Maybe you should read what is really there, and not post about what you think is there. This is what these people do. Search and Rescue! The definition of that is not Sit and Watch. Sightseers, Meth Cookers, Lalaleelous, or even AlaskaO's they are dispatched to an emergency, their job is to search and rescue. If it was you and or yours you wouldn't care what it cost monitarily, or safety wise, all you would care about is the fact that they get there and they get there fast. AlaskaO I apologize for calling you dumb, it was your statement that is dumb, ignorant. You want dumb read Lalaleelous posts.

You're kidding me right? Did you read your post? There is a huge difference between criminal activity and someone getting stranded on a glacier, mountain, or anywhere else. What are the duties and responsibilities of first responders? Is it to arrive to a scene and make a determination if criminal activity is occurring and use that determination to decide that they are going to attempt rescue? I don't believe so. No first reponder is going to arrive to a scene and say they are cooking meth in that house we are just going to let them all burn inside. You may want to stop responding, because your ignorance is showing more and more.

Shaggy74,

Apparently you make no distinction between human beings having accidents and human beings deliberately putting themselves in peril.

I believe members of the Alaska National Guard are human beings too.

If someone is cooking meth and causes an explosion, trapping themselves inside, I suppose you believe it's the duty of volunteer firemen to risk their own lives to save the chef.

I have read some really ignorant posts on here, but AlaskaO and lalaleelou take the cake. Part of the Alaska National Guards mission is search and rescue missions geniuses. If it was a family member of any one of you, you would be the first ones crying for someone to go save them. These people are human beings.

northpolesanta,

Go ahead and be santa. Give everyone everything. You could be just like Obama.

Hikers, canoists, birdwatchers and researchers don't exactly fall into the same category as people who purposefully try to climb Denali. They should know that they are going into very dangerous territory and when things don't go as planned, public funds and/or volunteers end up going after them in the very same dangerous territory.

akmad64, You appear to be one of those who like other people to take care of things. Because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't make them dumb. Because someone volunteers to help doesn't make them expendable.

Wow Just how dumb are you?? You too lalaleelou !! Just because these people wear uniforms,it doesn't make their lives anymore prescious than the victims of any accident/rescue. They don these uniforms because they volunteer to. They save lives because they can. Just because they are in the reserves don't mean they were drafted. Albiet the $/cost of a rescue is outrageous. It still doesn't make their lives any more valuable. What if it was your dumb as$ that needed rescuing. I've heard chimps scream smarter things than what you've just put out there. Ok Ok it's your opinion, but it couldn't be more STUPID. I agree that they should post a bond to insure some sort of recompensation. But here we are in the real world. They can't have gotten where they were without some knowledge in the sport/activity they were undertaking. We can't predict the future either, so there was no way of knowing that they were going to be in that dire of a situation. Thats just life. If all "idiots" would stay home and mind their own business... we wouldn't have heard from you.... just sayin.

and how much of a bond should hunters be forced to post before they go out in the toolees?

what about jet boaters?

or, hikers?

or, canoes?

or, birdwatchers?

or, researchers?

or, anyone else who leaves the road? well, as far as that goes, you could get in an accident between here and nenana, so how much of a bond should be have to post to drive to nenana? or, anchorage?

we live in a SOCIETY, we take care of each other.

This one IS different because there was a plane crash but in other cases, I have to agree with AlaskaO.

I think people should have to post a $100,000.00 bond before attempting things like climbing Denali.

The costs in lives and money rescuing idiots is unbelievable and shouldn't happen.

These rescues have got to stop. There is not one sightseer, mountainclimber or other dumb as$ that is worth the life of one guardsman. You climb onto a glacier and cannot get down, guess what, you stay on the glacier. Just like those IDIOTS that climbed Mt. Hood and caused the HH-60 to crash while trying to rescue them. The idiot survivors tried to climb it again the next year. STOP THE RESCUES!!!
