FAIRBANKS — One of the Interior’s ultimate running tests returns Sunday morning near Nenana.

The Annihilator, once known as “Alaska’s Toughest 10K Run,” will return after a 15-year hiatus, according to race officials.

Instead of a 10K course, the new Annihilator will be a race of about 8 miles in the hills near Nenana. The new version will follow the same grueling ridge, but will not cross either of the bridges leading to Nenana.

The event is scheduled to start at 11 a.m., with registration beginning at 10 a.m. There is no entry fee.

To get to the starting area, take the Parks Highway from Fairbanks toward Nenana and turn left about a mile before reaching the village. The turn will be well marked, race organizer Drew Harrington said.

Follow the signs to the gravel pit where the race will start and finish.

Runners and walkers of all age groups are welcome.

Following the race, there will be a pot-luck barbecue at the home of race organizer Andy Huetten. Directions to Huetten’s house on the Parks Highway between Nenana and Fairbanks will be distributed at the starting line.

For more information or if you are interested in volunteering to help with the race, contact Harrington at 451-6604 or Huetten at 832-5561.
