To the editor:
The Fairbanks Senior Center is here to serve seniors. The pioneering spirit and sacrifices they have given to our community are vital to all in Fairbanks. This is your center, seniors! The board of directors and the staff are all of one mind: To give the best we can to our Fairbanks seniors. Fairbanks would not be the thriving community it is if not for our seniors.
A newsletter is prepared each month. It contains the month’s activities, menus for the day, recipes and jokes. This is certainly not all-inclusive of what the center offers.
We are supported by donations received from private individuals and businesses; along with grants from the state of Alaska and the federal government. The center is able to provide essential services to all seniors that fall within the guidelines stipulated in this non-profit organization.
Volunteers (more always needed and welcomed) assist in all areas. Meals on Wheels is manned by a great kitchen staff that provides approximately 3,500 to 4,000 meals per month. Meals are delivered by volunteers and in addition the Homemaker Program Volunteer visits with seniors individually to ensure them of their value to Fairbanks.
Transportation is provided for many throughout the city. Our drivers are the best. They are brave hearts and gentle souls. Seniors are taken to the doctor, hospital, rehabilitation, grocery shopping, banking and various other places as needed.
I have worked in various positions in the work force, but can say without hesitation that this is the most rewarding position I have ever had. The seniors give so much more to me that I could ever give to them.
On Aug. 21, we are having a “Celebrating Seniors” fundraiser. Mark this date on your calendar and come join us in honoring these seniors. Big Daddy’s BBQ, Gary Toth Big Band DJ and many more activities are scheduled.
Looking for something to do? Want to be involved in a worthy venture? We would love to have you come on over. We’re at 1424 Moore St. (452-1735). We will be waiting to meet you.

As a "new" Senior, other than the gym, I cannot find any reason to utilize the Senior Center. It is being run as a Senior day care.
The staff doesn't seem to realize that there is a whole generation of active, still working Seniors that need a "clubhouse".
And, it was a very informative piece for those not familiar with the center. The News-miner could use this as a jumping off place for several feature articles, including a little coverage of the fundraiser.
Non-profits really struggle these days, and good ones need all the support they can get.
