Census excess

Letter to the editor:

The census is in what is most likely its final phase, and only a few more days remain. I received praise for my work and I wish the best for my co-workers and everyone on the operational level. Nevertheless, I tendered my letter of resignation as of July 17. Why? Because the repetitive intrusiveness inherent in the current operation provokes antagonism and ill will from those we interview.

This sentiment has gradually escalated phase by phase, from cooperation to reluctance, to irritation, to hostility. What’s next? These are my neighbors. What price is the bureau willing to pay for increased (statistical) cooperation?

Asking for someone’s personal information for a fourth or fifth time in a four-month period is an exercise in alienation. Especially when those interviewed point out that the government not only has that information, but that it can be generally obtained from the Internet. This does not bode well for future interactions with the public.

This concern, from an on-the-ground perspective, is an elephant in the room. Short memories? Not in Fairbanks. I enjoy getting out and about, and when all else goes awry, I choose integrity over self-preservation. So when I begin to find myself agreeing with angry respondents, .. something’s gotta give. And although I need the income, THE EXTENT of what I’ve been tasked to do conflicts with my view of the America I grew up in. I hope no one gets physically harmed. The psychological impact will remain.

To the shakers and movers at the highest echelons of decision making, I say “stop re-opening the wounds.” I can safely, well, with certainty, say that they would be hard pressed to find an ex co-worker who disagrees with my assertions.

I love my country and I am not anti-government. But I am opposed to the excessive use of the tools at its disposal. Those at the highest levels of influence are gauging our will to resist excesses.

Of course it's political. The census has a history since 1790 of being political regarding the policy of sexism, racism and intrusion of rights - from political consideration of whole beings regarding blacks , voting rights regarding women, citizenship regarding Native Americans , hell even the political use in the knowledge of free slaves concerning Sherman's march to the sea, not to mention Japanese internment, Arab-American privacy loss and on and on. I know I'm one of those crazy tinfoil-hat people who has the crazy thought that history could repeat itself because of historical proof. I think one ignores this racist, sexist and intrusive history by merely answering the question of race on the census. Shame on you and thanks a lot! I suspect, with especially this administration, this census's race questions will be used for some illusory policy of reparation or entitlement towards some form of citizenry to those who have no knowledge or interest in the concept of a Republic. That's the beauty of the census for those in power, the common folk usually don't find out until after the fact.

Hispanic, or those of Spanish descent, are southwestern European Caucasion. Should the census ask if you are Angle, Saxon, Pict, Roman, and so on? Personally, I am insulted that the feds even keep such ethnic data. Clearly, it's meant to create a basis for racially discriminatory legislation. I think they should only ask: Cro-Magnon? Neantherthal? American? and Unamerican?

Does anyone know why they don't consider Hispanic a race? That alone seems really insulting to me (and I'm a Cherokee/Welsh/Irish Settler mutt) Separating Hispanics into their own catagory/question and not counting them racially really seems biased. I mean, why don't the break down the other "races"? Pacific Islander covers a huge variety of people, most having less of a eugenic relation than the Hispanic categories.

Is it political? Something to do with immigration reform?

"Personally, I don't mind if the crazies aren't counted..."

Personally, I don't either. Of course, 'crazy' is a definition these days that is considered 'subjective'; what you consider 'crazy' may not be what I consider to be 'crazy'...

Your admiration for Karl Rove is duly noted here, AKLegacy. (FEMA death camps?)

In the face of unprecedented inanity/insanity about the census this year, the excessive diligence of the census bureau is understandable.

Considering the FEMA death camp/surveillance/tin foil hat stuff has all been coming from the irrational right regarding the census, I find it particularly admirable that such diligence has been exercised.

It would be advantageous to the left to under-count in right-wing districts. Uncounted = underrepresented in terms of the numbers of representatives a district can put in power.

That is why Karl Rove himself ended up putting out an ad encouraging everyone to make sure they are counted in the census. Personally, I don't mind if the crazies aren't counted. Apparently, someone out there wants all voices to be heard, and is willing to work extra hard to make sure everyone is counted. I guess someone out there still really believes in Democracy.

Obama didn't have to go on the view to tell us he's mixed up. I wonder how much that little gem of wisdom cost us.

I don't watch that stuff either, grace. I've just read snippets of the show. He was describing himself and other black Americans as mongrels and "all kinds of mixed up". He also indicated that other Americans are just as mixed up.

Overall, really inane.

Invictus,

I couldn't bear to watch; what was the pronouncement?

Based on Obama's latest pronouncement on The View, the next census will have to have "Mongrel" on the questionnaire.

Isanova -- Since my ancestors were forcibly displaced from our homeland in North Carolina and Tennessee, I put down "Appalachian American".

Phishnthegd, but do you want to believe, that was the question. there was the word 'want' in your pic, 'member ?

Allzel, contact Mark Begich. He will get right on it. If that fails, contact Rahm Emmanuel. Sorry - don't have a real answer for you.

The corruption in the our local regional Census Bureau really needs to be investigated. Does anyone know who should be contacted?

Isanova,

GOOD ANSWER! Wish I'd thought of that; now that you mention it I guess, I was born a "Floridian" and now I am a "Naturalized Alaskan"...

It may be too late for this but, if any of you have yet to be enumerated... when they ask for race list whatever you want. THEY HAVE TO WRITE IT IN. I encouraged anyone who questioned the question to put in "Elvish" but I also heard "Martian" and "American" (my favorite response) put down.

In a true sense, the census never left the '3/5ths days' behind it throughout it's history.

Phishnthegd, maybe you just want to believe that I want to believe.

Oh-please don't let this be a reincarnation of the last person who posted pics !

Another possible name for repetitive intrusiveness : Surveillance.
