ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Anchorage police say a 3-year-old boy has died after finding a gun and accidentally shooting himself.

Police spokeswoman Anita Shell says the boy's father, 28-year-old Timothy Joseph, called 911 after 9 a.m. Friday. The father reported the child had taken a gun off a TV stand and shot himself.

Shell says investigators were interviewing both the father, the only other person at home at the time of the shooting, and the mother, 44-year-old Karee Ann Joseph. Shell says no charges have been filed at this time.

Shell says the child's name has not been released.

Crime scene investigators were en route to the home in the 4800 block of Loretta Lane.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Our prayers and thoughts are with all the family members.

Although this is a horrible accident charges should be filed against the parents. Obviously this could have been avoided if the weapon was stored correctly. Therefore the charge of "Endangering the welfare of a minor" should be filed. And also involuntary manslaughter, leaving the gun out and not secure was reckless.

So heartbreaking.

What a tragedy, that could have been prevented.

God bless this poor family.

So very very sad.

Why is it so hard for people to keep their guns SECURED?!

Anyone who treats a gun like a socket wrench doesn't need to own one.

Arcticbreeze;

What could the state possibly charge him with that could be more serious than the charge he has already placed upon himself?

I imagine the LEOs will want to actually investigate the circumstances and situation, before considering charges, don't you all?

How very, very sad, makes my heart weep for one so little. I imagine there is enough grief at that home right now to fill the ocean. I wish there were some comfort.

robir8 I did too, and one never does 'get over it', I don't think. No matter how or when it happens, they stay a part of you forever.

this is terrible tragedy, however the father should be charged with something....everyone knows to have their guns locked up esp. with a toddler around. IMO this is child abuse.

RIP little guy. I lost a child. She was only 4 months. Its been nearly 30 years, never really got over it. Still tend the grave up on Birch Hill. She still talks to me in my dreams. My sympathy to the family. Be carefull with your guns.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. That has to be a terrible experience to live through.

We remember the child locks for the cabinet of cleaners, lock up the firearms around kids.
