ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The manager of the nation's second-highest volume cargo airport says new stopovers and rising demand for fuel may be signs of an economic upswing.

Manager John Parrott of Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport says the latest sign is the return of Cargolux Airlines, a Luxembourg-based cargo carrier. Cargolux began twice weekly refueling stops in Anchorage on April 15, the first in five years.

According to statistics from the Federal Aviation Administration, Anchorage had been the nation's highest volume stop for air cargo until a 15 percent drop from 2007 to 2008. Tennessee's Memphis International Airport took the top spot.

FAA numbers for 2009 are due out in July.
