Gilbert J. Nashookpuk, 20, pleaded guilty Friday to one count of sexual assault and one consolidated count of second-degree burglary as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.
Nashookpuk, originally from Nome, also will have to pay about $5,500 in restitution to the businesses he broke into in late 2008, including Goldpanner Chevron, Big Ray’s downtown store, Ebony and Ivory in the Co-op Plaza, Sport King and the Industrial Service Company.
He will be transferred later this month from Fairbanks Correctional Center to a facility in Idaho that specializes in treating developmentally disabled sex offenders.
If he successfully completes the program, he will be placed on probation for five years.
If he fails to complete the program, he will be sent back to jail, and his probation will be extended to 10 years.
“The agreement puts Mr. Nashookpuk in a treatment setting that can uniquely address his specific needs,” District Attorney Mike Gray said. “He will be required to participate in the treatment program for 5 years, although he may end up being there much longer.”
Gray declined to speak about Nashookpuk’s mental condition, citing federal privacy laws. Friday’s hearing also was attended by Nashookpuk’s court-appointed guardian.
The plea agreement was in line with the wishes of the victims in the case, Gray said.
In each burglary, someone broke a door or window and stole a cash box from the business. None of the businesses had security cameras, and Fairbanks police considered the cases unsolvable until they received a tip about Nashookpuk.
He has been incarcerated since January 2009 when he was arrested for sexually assaulting a sleeping woman who was letting him sleep on her couch.

Better to stay away from women and go home to entertain
yourself, by yourself and for yourself. Getting next to a woman
is just to dangerous nowadays. Best strive for what you want out of life, not waste your time trying to please a woman, just to
end up in jail. The chances are once you get involved with a woman, you will either end up in jail, be broke, divorced, on drugs or dead. They will take you for everything you have got and then cheat on you. Women are unfit beast to be around. The only reason you haven't been tagged, is because your time hasn't come. Enjoy your life, leave that trash behind. You won't find any descent women in Alaska, they aren't into men.
No-one said this young man has a serious mental disorder.
Have a little compassion for these people who have the mind of a young child but the body of an adult.
Don't tell me it's HIPAA, because that does not apply to this DA.
Five years in a sex offender treatment program? Is it a secure facility for people with mental disorders so serious that we can't even hear about what it is????? If not, how is public safety addressed in this sentence, as required by law? If so, how is he going to meaningfully benefit from this program if he is so mentally disabled that he is excused from criminal consequences for a sexual assault and a rash of other crimes.
This is yet another stupid resolution by a DA that gives away the farm on a daily basis. If you have to do that because of heavy caseloads, then at least don't do it with serious crimes.
How is this guy supposed to pay restitution if he's in a treatment program for 5 years and has serious mental health issues? Where is this program and what is it like? Is it secured at night, or is it just a drop-in meeting place? Is it in Alaska or elsewhere?
I've never heard of a 5-year sex offender treatment program, so it would nice to find out what it's like.
Chris Freiberg, did you ask any of these questions, or just act as a scribe, sitting quietly in the courtroom while this ridiculous proceeding took place? Did you look at the court's file and see if there were any pleadings in there that contained useful information?
Who was the judge in this proceeding? Could you at least have let us know that? I know we can look it up online, but you're the reporter....
