ANCHORAGE, Alaska - U.S. Sen. Mark Begich has hired the former mayor of Juneau as his field representative for northern southeast Alaska.

Sally Smith also is a former three-term state Democratic legislator who represented Fairbanks in the late 1970s and early '80s.

Begich says Smith is familiar with Alaska issues and a variety of viewpoints.

Smith was mayor of Juneau from October 2000 to October 2003.

Very glad to see her in charge of the senator's Fairbanks office. Smart, stable; Fairbanks will (again) like her. Former schoolteacher, very mainstream person.

Remember her ads?? Just a big dot. No words. No picture. A big dot. Sort of sums up her legislative career. A mere dot.

George Bush liked Sally too, Boodrow. He took her to the Big I for few cold ones circa 1975.

As I recall she was a big time liberal when she was a legislator. I am sure she will be a benefit to our single term senator.
