It’ll be basketball all day and into the night for the next few days at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Patty Center.

No, the Alaska Nanooks season hasn’t been extended. However, 17 men’s teams, eight women’s teams and three masters teams are entered in the three divisions of play in the WEIO North American Basketball Tournament that starts this morning and runs through Saturday evening.

Games are scheduled from 8 a.m.-10 p.m. today through Friday and from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday. The championship games will be held Saturday evening with the masters playing at 6 p.m., the women at 7:05 p.m. and the men at 8:10 p.m.

Each tournament features a double-elimination format with a winner-take-all championship game. There are no “if” games to determine the winner.

Teams from throughout Alaska are planning to compete. There are men’s teams from Dot Lake, Anchorage, Allakaket, Rampart, Nenana, Minto, Nulato, Fort Yukon, Bristol Bay, Norton Sound and Fairbanks.

Tanana, Anaktuvuk Pass, Anchorage and Fairbanks are represented in the women’s tournament while Bettles and two Fairbanks teams are in the Masters event.

So, if you didn’t get enough basketball action during the high school conference tournaments last week, there is plenty more on tap the next few days at the Patty Center.

lol, yes i'm wrong, your right. hydaburg did win the championship. too bad about the incident afterwards because they haven't returned since then. but to say the competition is weak here is a bit of an understatement. the championship game last year was phenomenal with tanana winning by a point at the buzzer. campus nates had that game except for a couple of mistakes during the last 20 seconds. the games were fun to watch last night and calvin charlies team looks pretty good right now.

Yeah Tanana has won a majority of the titles but that is only because none of the dominant Southeast teams want to come up here and play against the much weaker comp. Also if I remember correctly some of Tanana's players are not even from Tanana as I remember Sharpshooter Chris Bryant from Metlakatla playing for them a few times and former 2a state player of the year Roberto Burgess who is not from Tanana. Like I mentioned earlier. It sure would be nice to see some of the teams that compete at All Native and Gold Medal come up here once in awhile

Not true snogorider, Tanana did lose to a team from Hydaburg a few years ago. Former Nanook standout player Matt Carle was on that team that defeated the Wolves! After losing the championship game on the court that saturday night, some of the Tanana players started a "friendly wrestling match" with a few of the players from Hydaburg in the parking lot of a certain watering hole! They lost that one too! Haha!

Tanana has dominated the tournament the past 5-6 years with only 1 loss to Drew Olsons team 2 years ago.

What! No Hydaburg this year? I remember they came up here a few years ago and dominated everybody in the tournament. It would be cool to see some of the other teams that compete at All Native and Gold Medal come up here also. Then again they play against tougher competition down there in southeast so I can understand why those teams never come up here.
